Be a Lifeguard
Rescue those who are being taken away to death, And those who are staggering to the slaughter, Oh hold them back! If you say, “See, we did not know this,” Does He who weighs the hearts not consider it? And does He who watches over your soul not know it? And will He not repay a person according to his work? (Proverbs 24:11-12)
A lifefuard is a most noble profession. It is a high calling for those who accept it. They are responsible for helping and protecting people in water emergencies as well as educating people on the intricacies of water safety. A lifefuard is ever-vigilant and always on duty!
Lifeguards don’t just rest on their laurels! They go through intense training, both physical and mental. They must continue their training perpetually. They must remain physically capable of helping those in the throes of panic. They have to remain vigilant both on and off duty for need of their skills. They have to be skilled at lifesaving as well as teaching and mentoring. And they are morally, and often legally, obligated to act at any time, both on and off duty. They must be able to do all of this lifesaving work while keeping themselves safe from harm!
For us who have donned the mantle of “Follower of Christ,” we are lifeguards! We have a duty, commanded by our Lord and Saviour, to remain ever-vigilant for opportunities to share the lifesaving knowledge of the gospel. We have a solemn duty to train and learn the Bible. We have to do our best to maintain our physical bodies and care for our temples to God. And we must always share the gospel with those in danger without fear of offending. This means never shying away from truth or veering into the realm of apostacy. We have to protect ourselves and keep our own souls safe in the process of helping others!
There is no higher calling than to be a Christian lifeguard to others! As a follower of Jesus you have donned that mantle and my prayer for you is that you take on that duty with joy and strong devotion! Be a lifeguard!
